A free driving companion app

Android Auto is a free-to-use utility from Google Inc., designed to help drivers stay connected and focused on the road. This companion app is the modern driver’s virtual assistant, connecting you to the rest of the Google Suite to give you the features and services you need without switching between apps and spending unnecessary time using devices.

Before driving, you only need to set up Android Auto, and once you’re on the road, you can activate it via voice commands. You can navigate with Waze or Google Maps or stream your playlists with Spotify or Google Play Music.

Stay connected on the road

The main benefit of having Android Auto is its incentive for safety. Distracted driving increases the risk of road accidents and can take the form of texting, calling, opening a navigation app, or choosing the song to play. With this driving companion, you can access all these services from a single location—without even the need to reach out to your phone.

In terms of accessibility, it’s as easy as reactivating the AI-powered tool by saying, OK, Google. Similar to Siri for Android or Amazon Alexa, it uses voice recognition and natural language processing or NLP to comply with the user’s voice commands. Whether playing a song on your preferred media player or setting a location using your navigation app, everything can be done just by speaking audibly.

Of course, it suffers from a couple of technical restrictions. For one, it requires constant data or internet access to work effectively. You might find the app having difficulty following orders in places where reception is less than optimal. Also, for some reason, the robotic voice response tends to get clipped at the end, making it difficult to hear what the app is saying.

Available for all users

The latest Android Auto 10 update is now available to all users, and you can make use of the stand-alone APK installer to easily install the update on your device. However, please note that this method requires a manual update. Download the installer onto your mobile device, initiate the update, and seamlessly complete the process by following the on-screen instructions.

What’s new in Version 11.4 and the next patches to come?

Although Android Auto’s Version 11.4 patch isn’t that big of an update, it’s expected to lay the groundwork for upcoming huge changes to the app. Bugs are going to be fixed and the overall performance will be refined in anticipation of the upcoming features. Changes expected to roll out soon include AI-powered message summary support, which will prompt Google Assistant to analyze long messages and come up with a condensed version for the user. Futhermore, Google is also refining consistency aspects between the app and mobile devices.

A must-have for drivers

Android Auto, a free utility from Google Inc., is a virtual assistant for modern drivers, connecting seamlessly to the Google Suite.
